A 4-year-old boy was airlifted to a Denver hospital after his foot was severed in a lawn mower accident near Mitchell

MITCHELL, Neb. 鈥 A 4-year-old boy is recovering in a Denver hospital after his foot was severed Sunday in a lawn mowing accident in western Nebraska.

Shortly after noon on Sunday, the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff鈥檚 Office received a report that a 4-year-old boy鈥檚 foot had been severed in a lawn mower accident at a rural residence near Mitchell, Nebraska. Deputies, the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department and Regional West Ambulance responded to the scene, according to a statement from the Sheriff鈥檚 Office.

A nearby off-duty medical professional rendered aid immediately. The boy went by an AirLink plane to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff and then flown to a Denver hospital for further treatment.

鈥淭he investigation indicates that this was an accidental event, and we anticipate no criminal charges,鈥 the statement said. 鈥淏ecause there are no charges indicated, we are not naming any of the parties involved.鈥

According to a 2024 study by the University of Iowa鈥檚 Public Health Department, 10,000 children are injured by lawn mowers every year. These injuries are the number one cause of major limb loss under 10 years of age in the U.S.
