RIVERSIDE, Calif. 鈥 One person died and six were injured in a four-vehicle crash Wednesday night, April 16, that police said involved a hit-and-run and may have been tied to impaired driving.

It happened

Officer Ryan Railsback, a spokesman for the Riverside Police Department, said one driver was taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Six other people were hurt.

Sgt. Emilio Angulo of the Riverside Police Traffic Bureau said that around 6:20 p.m. police, fire personnel and paramedics were called to a four-vehicle collision at the intersection of Market Street and 5th Street.

The preliminary investigation found a man driving a Dodge Challenger was traveling southbound on Market Street at high speed when it rear-ended a Honda Civic, causing the Civic to collide head-on with a northbound vehicle.

The Challenger then collided with another vehicle as it came to rest.

The Civic driver was fatally injured while the suspect driver attempted to flee as officers arrived and was detained by police, a police statement said. Others injured in the crashes, including the Challenger driver, were treated for minor injuries.

Market Street was closed in both directions between Mission Inn Avenue and 5th Street for the investigation.

The identity of the person killed was not immediately made public.

The suspect also was not immediately identified and it was not immediately known what counts that driver may face. A police statement did note: 鈥淚t is believed that drugs and/or alcohol may have been contributing factors.鈥

Anyone with information helpful to investigators was urged to contact Riverside Police Department Traffic Detective Matt Parrish at (951) 826-877177 or Mparrish@riversideca.gov
